Code of Conduct

The following are the Code of Conduct and policies of Magpie Community Events (MCE).

Accessibility

We will proudly advocate for ADA needs. We will do our best to provide an equitable outcome for our peers with accessible spaces and accommodations. At times, this is unfortunately not always achievable (i.e., a volunteer opportunity on a private property where a non-profit keeps animals), and we will notate whether or not a particular event is appropriate for our disabled community. We will proudly signify accessibility in the disability-friendly spaces that we do occupy. If able, we will do our best with accommodations that we can provide, such as signifiers on your badge or other notations to help with navigating our spaces when applicable, signage for accessible spaces, etc. Please let us know if you may need these by emailing [email protected]. Service dogs are always welcome; however, please note that any animals that do not adhere to the ADA regulations may be asked to be removed from the premises with no re-entry to our spaces while with the animal in question.

Safety First

Ages

MCE events are intended to be all-ages unless specified otherwise. Parents and guardians will need to be responsible for their party of those under the age of 18 when attending our events, and minors may be granted a specific badge. Some areas of our spaces may require ID age verification regardless of badge type; thus, please have this readily available upon request.

Consent

Please be mindful of consent. Whether or not in fursuit, cosplay, costume, “sexy” attire, or plain clothes, there is a person that may not wish to be handled, photographed, etc. Respect the space and needs of others by requesting permission. If disregarded, you will then be considered the offending party if the individual in question wishes to bring your actions to security for review.

Security

Security/Operations will be available at applicable events, signified by a distinct badge to help with ease of communication. As we understand circumstances occur anywhere, you are welcome to approach any staff member who will be readily available to help with general inquiries or help bring a security staff member to you. If you are being threatened by a hostile individual, please let any available staff or volunteer know immediately, regardless of their position.

Behavior

Furries aside, we are still taking up the space of those who are welcoming our community. All MCE attendees and peers must be respectful to others regardless of involvement within or without the fandom, especially while in spaces that we may not be welcomed back to. Excessive language, gesturing, sexual advances, etc., towards others with intent to do harm, especially towards other attendees, volunteers, staff, guests, event space staff, and thensome, is strictly prohibited.

Hate & Discrimination

MCE is intended to be inclusive of our BIPOC, LGBTQIA2s+, neurodiverse, and disabled community. We intend to harbor a safe environment for those in our inclusive spaces. We have a zero-tolerance policy for hate speech, imagery (“implied” or otherwise), attire, and all adjacent forms of such that exist to diminish the existence of another. Xenophobia, transphobia, misogyny, ableism, pedophilia, zoophilia, and et al. are all strictly forbidden. We do not tolerate the abuse of animals nor people, which includes our peers, attendees, volunteers, staff, and guests. You will be revoked access to any and all of our events and spaces, both in-person and digital, with no refunds to your admission or any other financial compensation.

Dress Code & Costume Props

Due to the nature of the wide variety of spaces that we host our events, dress code will align appropriately with the venue space we will be occupying. However, all public-facing events will require appropriate clothing that will provide full coverage of genitalia, buttocks, and breasts unless deemed otherwise at the respective “After Dark” spaces—which will have their own respective rules and regulations that will be posted.

Alternatively, a space may notate “no masks/full face coverings”; thus, a fursuit head will not be allowed, unless MCE is given explicit permission otherwise. We will always respect the needs of our space before our own. No exceptions!

As costume props may be an exciting addition to your fursuit, cosplay, etc., we do request social awareness on your decision to bring certain items into spaces that we may be occupying. A foam sword with a swashbuckler outfit is far more socially acceptable than attire that may replicate an oppressive instance from recent social justice reform movements. Prop weapons that look near identical to or near indistinguishable from real life weapons will need to be reviewed by MCE staff at the signified station, and if deemed inappropriate for our spaces, may be denied entry until the prop is removed from the event property. You will not be compensated for your loss of time, resources, etc.

Art & Vendors

Any artists or dealers (vendors) who display or sell their work at our events are expected to follow the guidelines set at those events. AI, bootleg, or stolen artwork is forbidden and may be grounds for banning from future events. All work you sell you must have full legal rights to sell, either as your own work or under contract with other artists. You are also required to obtain your own city and state licenses required, and file your own sales tax after selling at any of our events.

Adult work is required to be hidden or censored at all times, only allowing those to view after an ID age verification. The exception to this would be any area we mark as adult-only, usually with it’s own separate ID check to enter.

If you have to cancel a table or placement in one of our events, please contact us immediately. No-shows may have difficulty getting tables at our future events. Payment deadlines are firm unless you have reached out to us with special circumstances. Extensions will not be granted if you contact us after the initial deadline has passed.

Disciplinary Actions

Pending the infraction, we may proceed to higher levels of discipline before issuing earlier actions. In general, however, we will follow these levels of action:

  1. Issue a warning
  2. Revoke your badge and access to the event*
  3. Fully revoke access to any and all MCE events*

If applicable and given the legal grounds to warrant such, we reserve the right to pursue legal action if a violation were to exceed a full ban from any and all MCE involved projects.

*We will not be responsible for compensation of finances for travel, commute, admission, et al. for any disregard of the aforementioned.

Mutual Collaboration Clause

MCE encourages the uplifting of it’s community peers with mutual collaboration with other organizations with similar mission and value statements. We will not interfere with our peers reaching out to pursue other projects, whether while maintaining a positive relationship with MCE or entirely on their own endeavors. If a person is found to be aligned with MCE and any additional organizations, we encourage this broad spectrum relationship, and simply request that MCE’s small pool of resources not be depleted. We would much rather share a resource than lose one entirely, through collaboration, affiliation, and growth. MCE is intended to help build up a sense of safety through community. However, we can and will take appropriate actions to remove individuals who may be affiliated with organizations that exist to diminish the mission and values of MCE (such as hate organizations recognized by the Southern Poverty Law Center), as this is grounds for termination. Pending the nature of this offense, we may pursue legal action through our partnership with We The Action.
